Success Story - MAC Super Squad

Four Mount Aspiring College Year 8s had a roller coaster ride in the spotlight when they were catapulted to fame by TV2's, Studio2, Super Squad game show.

Round 1

Their story began back in March of 2006 when Rohan Brash (8CB), Lara Bullock (8GO), Elmo Cotter (8GO) and Henry Schikker (8FA) were first asked to represent the school in Round 1 of Super Squad against Hokitika. Although the newly formed squad had no idea what to expect, they won through to the next round. Henry even got to put a pie in the face of our Principal, Maurie Jackways.

Round 2

Round 2's challenge was Westport. This time, although the rounds were the same as previously, a Brain Box Challenge (or general knowledge quiz), a Star Performance (a stage show), a Dare Devil Dare and Sports Challenge, two of the members competed in each event. More exciting stuff which included Elmo and Rohan drinking a cocktail of chilli, sardines, raw eggs and baked beans!

Round 3

Motueka were the competition in the semi-finals. The whole squad competed in every round. A very tough competition that saw an All Black inspired hip hop dance raise the standard and crown the MAC Super Squad South Island Champions, worthy to compete in the Grand Final against the North Island Champions. For the semi-final the Squad's prize was an Apple computer for the school.

The Final

The Grand Final was to be filmed in Auckland over a week of intensive competition. The other finalists, Hawera, and the MAC Squad were flown to the City of Sails and put up in the Sky City. In an incredible week of experiences, both squads did brilliantly well, but left town not knowing the final result of the competition that was to be decided by the Studio 2 viewers.

The outcome of the voting was so close that a third, spontaneous vote had to be called. Then and only then were the MAC Squad just pipped at the post. Although they just missed the trip to Australia each team member received a Playstation 2 for their just reward.

At all times the Squad acted graciously in defeat and victory, conducted themselves with great sportsmanship and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

Well Done MAC Super Squad!
